Marton Mornings
Marton Mornings was set up in 1996 in Marton Mission Room – it was simply a getting together of people in the village who are not at work during the day on a Tuesday morning from 10.0 to 11.30 – and is still going on.    They come for coffee or tea, and now, by tradition, cakes and biscuits. It means that people who might otherwise not see anyone else in the day can exchange news and information.
Once a month a “Computer Corner” is held at which people can discuss computer problems or get advice on buying computer-related equipment. A favourite topic seems to be the variability in availability and quality of broadband connections in and around the village.
Everyone is indeed welcome to Marton Mornings, they do not have to live in Marton.
Computer corners for Autumn 2010 are on:
14th September
12th October
9th November

Short Mat Bowls
Short Mat Bowls was first introduced to the villagers of Marton and its surrounds as part of of Ryedale Council ‘Sport for All’ initiative in 1991. Grants from the County Council, the District Council and the Carnegie Trust funded the purchase of the mats and other equipment and regular bowling finally got under way in November of 1992. In 1996,to enable some members to compete in outside competitions, the Club became affiliated to the North Yorkshire Short Mat Bowling Association, (http://www.nysmba.com/).
After replacement of the Village Hall floor and several years of experience, the Club felt confident enough to raise a team for regular competitive fixtures and they entered the Scarborough League for the 1997/98 season.
Our season runs from September to April on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings for social bowling, and we currently run 3 teams in the Scarborough League, (two in the 1st Division and one in the 3rd). The club has a friendly atmosphere and welcomes male and female newcomers of all ages. Come and try; we have equipment for beginners so there is no initial expense.
Women's Institute
Normanby & Marton WI was formed in June 1959, although we believe that a WI was formed in the 1920s when the village hall was first opened but this seems to have been closed at some time perhaps between the wars.
Meetings were first held in Normanby School and in Marton Village Hall. In later years we alternated with Marton Mission Room and Normanby Chapel and since the Normanby Chapel closure we have our meetings mostly in Marton Mission Room, but occasionally meetings take the form of visits to places of interest.
We currently have a committee of eight members.
We meet on the 1st Wednesday of every month except August at 7.00pm in Marton Mission Room, unless stated on our programme.
Guests and new members are always welcome.
